Presentation: Flange Connections of Precast Concrete Double-Tee Parking Structures: Fatigue Failure of Flange Connections

This presentation delves into the fatigue failure mechanisms associated with double-tee connections in precast concrete parking structures. It explores how fatigue failures can be readily identified in the field and provides insights into the practical challenges these failures pose. The discussion includes an examination of code requirements for high-cycle fatigue performance, offering an analysis of recent studies that challenge traditional interpretations established by the precast concrete industry. By offering alternative viewpoints, the presentation aims to foster a deeper understanding of the factors influencing fatigue behavior and the long-term performance of double-tee connections.

Objectives

  • Gain an understanding of the mechanism behind high-cycle fatigue failure of double-tee connections
  • Observe methods for assessing parking structures for fatigue connection failures, including visual identification of fatigue fractures
  • Review AWS and AISC Code requirements regarding design of connections for fatigue resistance
  • Examine the current state of the art in design of precast double-tee connections for fatigue resistance.
