Join us for our February Membership Meeting at Terracon in Dallas!

Topic: Look Out Above! A Discussion on Progressive and Sudden Failure of Modern Cast Stone Masonry

Cast stone has certainly found its place in American architecture, particularly as a cladding system and masonry ornamentation. This is particularly true within civic structures and institutional campuses, such as schools, universities, corporate campuses, hospitals, hotels, and many others. Cast stone is often celebrated as a cost effective and readily available alterative to cut stone ornamentation. One thing we often forget: cast stone is a form of concrete. Therefore, it requires maintenance and monitoring, just like concrete. This presentation will discuss the specification, manufacturing, and progressive failure indications of cast stone masonry, as well as the dangerous situations that occur when it fails.

Presenter: Parker Mink, PE

Parker Mink is a Senior Associate with the Dallas office of Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. Parker has been with WJE for almost 11 years and has led numerous investigations and assessments of historic and modern masonry systems. In particular, he has extensive experience in assessment, stabilization, and repair design of deteriorating architectural cast stone systems.
